Buckfastleigh to Totnes on foot, and pizza at the end

The Buckfastleigh to Totnes Trail is a walk of around eight miles (Landfall lists it at 12 kilometres) that follows mainly quiet lanes, public footpaths and bridleways. It links the Dartmoor Way and Abbots Way with the John Musgrave Heritage Trail, and it runs through Staverton and past the Cider Press at Dartington. Walking guides give it three and a half to four hours, with some saying you should allow a little longer.

The route isn't waymarked, so download the GPX file or carry a map before you set out. Along the way, the Sea Trout Inn at Staverton, near the church, is a natural pub stop, and the Cider Press at Dartington has a café.

Getting to the start is part of the fun. Buckfastleigh is the terminus of the South Devon Railway, a heritage steam line that runs along the Dart to Totnes Riverside, about six miles. You could take the steam train out and walk back, or walk and then catch the train. A number 88 bus also runs between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, according to a local walking guide, though it's worth checking timetables.

For those who want to see more of the river, the waymarked Dart Valley Trail runs between Totnes and Dartmouth and is a much longer route, described by one national magazine as 17 miles in total.

After the walk, you'll arrive in Totnes with an appetite. Albatross Pizza Shop is at 105 High Street, opposite the Bull Inn. It doesn't take bookings, so give your name and wait for a text when a table is ready.

Check current path conditions, closures and transport before you set out.
