How Landfall works
Trust first. Here's how places get on the site, how recommendations are made and how anything paid for is labelled.
What Landfall is
A discovery guide to the South West of England — independent cafés, restaurants, pubs, shops, galleries, places to stay, beaches and walks. It is not a review site and not a directory. The aim is that you arrive not knowing where you want to go, and leave wanting to go somewhere specific.
How places are added
Places are added in two ways: written up by the Landfall team, or submitted by the business itself. Everything is reviewed before it appears. We don't bulk-generate listings, and we don't publish pages that have nothing useful on them.
How businesses claim a listing
A business owner creates an account, finds their listing and requests ownership with verification. An admin checks it before access is granted. Nobody can take over a listing without that check.
How recommendations work
Recommendations combine geographic proximity, category, shared characteristics and editorial curation. We avoid calling anything 'the best' unless we can show why — you'll see 'Landfall picks', 'Recommended nearby' and 'Worth exploring' instead.
How paid placement is labelled
Landfall is free to use and listings are free. Paid options are planned. Anything paid for is labelled Featured or Sponsored, every time, wherever it appears. Editorial coverage is never for sale.
Corrections and reports
Businesses can request a correction from their listing page. Visitors can report anything inaccurate. Corrections are prioritised over everything else — an out-of-date listing is worse than no listing.
Reviews
Landfall doesn't run an open review system. Instead we publish editorial descriptions, verified business information and curated recommendations, and link out to external reviews where that's useful.
Labels you'll see
What each label means
- Landfall pick — written and chosen by the Landfall team. Nothing was paid for.
- Featured — given priority placement. Will be a paid option in future and is always labelled.
- Business submitted — information provided by the business and checked before publication.
- Sponsored — paid editorial. Always labelled at the top of the piece.
About our listings. Basic details for places and walks are imported from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors) and are being reviewed — please check with businesses before travelling. Journal stories and collections are sample editorial content while Landfall is in build. Data sources
