Cakes and traybakes on Church Street: Browns Bakery & Café, Sidmouth

Browns Bakery & Café began in 2020 as a small bakery started by Liv Brown, who had earlier baked cakes for a family restaurant on Sidmouth High Street. It first traded from East Street and moved to its current premises on Church Street in March 2023. The business has since passed to new owners, Duncan and Jane, who say on the café's website that they spend much of their week developing new bakes.

Cakes are the draw. The shop sells traybakes and brownies alongside slices of cake, with tea, coffee and toast if you want to sit in. Local visitors also use it for celebration cakes, with one reviewer describing ordering a birthday cake from the bakery for a friend's occasion.

Upstairs there is more seating, and one reviewer noted the seats by the window, which look out over the top of the busy High Street entrance, are the ones to aim for on a warm day.

Opening hours are listed slightly differently in different places (the bakery's own social page gives Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 4, and Sunday from 10 to 4), so it's worth checking before you set out.

If you're planning a walk, Sidmouth makes a good base. The Sid Valley Ring circles the town, and the South West Coast Path section from Exmouth ends here after around 21 kilometres. Either would leave you well placed for a slice of cake.
